No More Ransom Fights Back!

No More Ransom is an initiative launched by Interpol to fight against ransomware. They offer a repository of tools and methods to combat ransomware. Their first recommendation is to follow best practices around ransomware and to use a quality security product. However, if someone is infected, they have a collection of decrypted threats and tools.

Avoiding Ransomware Best Practices

The website lists a few best practices on how to avoid ransomware. These are:

1 – Backup Process

Create both a cloud and physical backup of your files. After backing up, disconnect from these services. VIPRE recommends Keep-It-Safe for small business owners. (Disclaimer: Both VIPRE and Keep-it-Safe are owned by J2 Global)

2 – Robust Antivirus

Use a tool like VIPRE’s antivirus product line. Make sure the Advanced Active Protection is on at all times in order to detect new strains of ransomware that have never been seen before.

3 – Update All Software

Patches are vital for work and personal computers. VIPRE offers patch management with VIPRE Advanced Security, VIPRE Ultimate Security Bundle, and VIPRE Endpoint Security – Server.

4 – Do Not Trust

Do Not Trust Anyone. If you see a file for download from the internet or attached to an email, do not trust it. Cybercriminals will often use fake email messages to dupe people into clicking bad links or installing software. Unfortunately, if a user is tricked into installing software this can override the security measures put into place by an antivirus. It’s why a lot of companies prevent end users from installing products.

5 – Show file extensions on Windows computers

Turning on the setting that lets you see file extensions will help you spot scams. Oftentimes files will be named something.doc with an extension of ‘.scr’, ‘.vbs’, or ‘.exe’. Scammers want you to believe files may be a document, image, or video instead of an executable file.

6 – If you are infected by ransomware – disconnect from the internet

Disconnect from the internet of other network connections (such as wi-fi) to stop the spread of the malware. This is especially important nowadays when malware will often self-replicate and propagate across networks.
